The 2021 Best Colleges rankings from U.S. News & World Report are here! Many of Shorelight’s outstanding universities improved their university ranking year over year, and five are included in the U.S. News top 100 best colleges.

How to use university rankings

International students, if you are not familiar with university rankings, they can be one resource (among many useful tools) to help you identify and narrow down your US university search as you consider where to apply. 

Simply put, university rankings indicate a standard of quality based on specific evaluation criteria. In the US, private organizations (such as U.S. News & World Report and the Princeton Review) conduct and publish university rankings; there are no official government rankings.  

Each private organization will have its own standards for ranking universities. For example, U.S. News & World Report uses criteria focusing on reputation, research, and publication categories when finalizing its global college rankings. Additional criteria may factor into its annual Best Colleges and major-specific rankings.
